Discovering Lanzarote´s Delights
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010
Where in the world is Lanzarote? Many people who have never visited this popular holiday island would probably plump for off the coast of Spain. But whilst Lanzarote is Spanish owned it is in fact located off the coast of West Africa. Which begins to explain why it has been so successful as a holiday destination over the years. As the weather here is fantastic.
It is one of seven islands in the Canarian archipelago which were all created by volcanic activity. The evidence of which is at its most apparent on Lanzarote – and also at its most unspoilt. As the island experienced eruptions just a few hundred years ago. And erosion has had little time to spoil the scenery. Which is truly amazing in and around the Timanfaya Volcano Park which is where the bulk of these now dormant peaks can be found.
Lanzarote is also very close to two neighbouring islands. La Graciosa to the north is a tiny rock often referred to as the 8th Canary Island and home to around 600 inhabitants. There are no cars or roads here – just beautiful beaches and plenty of peace and quiet. Hop on a ferry from Orzola in the north of Lanzarote and step back in time.
Fuerteventura is located off the south coast of Lanzarote across the Bocaina Straits from the resort of Playa Blanca. Again anyone visiting Lanzarote can simply hop on board a ferry to explore this interesting destination too.
Back on Lanzarote there is an abundance of places to stay. Thousands of visitors like to book Lanzarote villas and apartments for self catering breaks. And there are also hundreds of decent hotels on the island too. Such as the Gran Melia Volcan in Playa Blanca and the Hesperia in Puerto Calero.
All flights to Lanzarote touch down at Arrecife airport, the sole airfield on the island which is named after the capital city, located about 3km away. Lanzarote is small so transfer times to the resorts are pretty quick. With Playa Blanca the furthest away at about a forty minute drive. Puerto del Carmen is the closest resort to the airport and can be reached in as little as ten minutes.
It is possible to book Lanzarote airport transfers in advance of arrival on the island. This is also very advisable as there is no shuttle bus to take tourists from the airport to their choice of holiday resort.
